1708 is the workhorse for transom, stringer and tabbing work. You get 17 oz of stitched E-glass at +45 and -45 degrees with a 3/4 oz chopped strand mat backer, which means a thick structural ply and a secondary bond surface in one pass instead of alternating cloth and mat.

  • Where it goes: transom skins, stringer tabbing, hull repairs, bulkhead attachment, anywhere off-axis shear load is the problem.
  • Resin compatibility: polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy. The mat is stitched to the biaxial layer, so 1708 wets out with epoxy as well as polyester: work resin into the mat side first and roll it down firmly. If you would rather lay a thinner ply with no mat, DB170 is the same 17 oz +/-45 glass without it.
  • Resin demand: roughly 1.4:1 resin to glass by weight, about 3.9 oz per square foot.
  • Width: 50 in, cut from 1 yard up to full rolls.
  • Build rate: 0.044 in per ply, so three or four plies gets a transom laminate up fast.

Roll it out mat side down against the substrate. Cuts ship folded or rolled, depending on the length.

Biaxial Fabric โ€“ This stitch-bonded, non-crimp reinforcement combines unidirectional warp (0ยฐ) and weft (90ยฐ) fibers for enhanced stiffness without adding weight or laminate thickness. Ideal for high-performance structural laminates, biaxial fabric is commonly used in boat hulls, trailer panels, wind turbine blades, sports gear, and bridge decks.

Each roll includes 17 oz biaxial cloth with a ยพ oz chopped strand mat backing. Roll dimensions: 50โ€ณ wide ร— approximately 52 yards long.

This same fabric is also available in 6" and 12" widths as a 1708 biaxial fiberglass tape.

1708 Biaxial Fiberglass by the yard

  • 17 oz biaxial (+/-45ยฐ) stitched fiberglass for multidirectional reinforcement in structural laminates.
  • Includes 3/4 oz per square foot of chopped strand mat for bonding to wood, foam, or cured laminate in marine and composite repairs.
  • Stitched, not woven, so resin saturates quickly with fewer air bubbles in epoxy, polyester or vinyl ester.
  • Builds thickness fast in bulkheads, stringers, transoms, decks, and hulls.
  • Works with epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester. The mat is stitched to the biaxial layer, so epoxy wets it out.
  • Stitch-bonded, so it stays flexible and contours around curves.
  • Consistent quality for marine, industrial, and DIY work.

What To Expect When You Order Fabric Rolls

Biaxial Fiberglass Suppliers

Biaxial fiberglass is a type of fiberglass fabric where the fibers are stitched together in two directions, typically at +45ยฐ and -45ยฐ angles or 0ยฐ and 90ยฐ. Unlike woven fiberglass, the fibers in biaxial cloth are not interlaced, but rather laid flat and stitched, which improves strength and drapability.

1708 is 17 oz per square yard of E-glass stitched at plus and minus 45 degrees with a 3/4 oz per square foot chopped strand mat backer. 1808 is 18 oz per square yard stitched at 0 and 90 degrees over the same 3/4 oz mat, and builds slightly thicker per ply, about 0.048 inch against 0.044 inch. Both run in polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy.

Unlike woven cloth, biaxial fiberglass is stitched, not woven, so it lays flatter, wets out faster, and provides superior load distribution without crimped fibers.

Yes, you can use epoxy resin with 1708 biaxial fiberglass because it has a stitched mat instead of a chemical binder like chopped strand mat.

1708 weighs about 2 lb per linear yard. The number describes the build: 17 oz biaxial glass stitched at plus and minus 45 degrees, backed by a thin chopped strand mat. The mat face bonds down into the layer beneath it, which is why 1708 is the go-to single-ply reinforcement for transoms and stringers.

Plan on about 4 oz of mixed epoxy per square foot of 1708 for a hand layup. A full yard off the 50 in roll is 12.5 sq ft, so that is roughly 50 oz per yard, per ply. Add 15 to 20% for waste, or run the layup through our resin calculator for the exact amount.

Biaxial fabric works well with polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy resins. Be sure to choose the right resin system for your project and material compatibility.
