Tape saves you cutting strips off a wide roll and ending up with a raw edge that frays into the layup. Three products, three different jobs. The 8.7 oz E-glass cloth tape in 1 and 1.5 in is the light one, for a small seam or reinforcing an edge. The 12 oz warp unidirectional tape in 3 in runs the fiber along the length, which a chine or a stringer flange wants.
The 1708 biaxial tape in 6 in is the structural one, the same 17 oz biaxial with mat backer as the wide goods, in a width that fits a tabbing job. Cuts are sold by the yard, with longer roll options on the cloth and unidirectional tapes.
