Common applications
- Transom and stringer rebuilds: 3 to 4 plies of 1708 biaxial wet out with polyester or epoxy for a thick structural laminate in one ply.
- Hull and deck delamination repair: grind back to sound glass, relaminate with CSM and woven or biaxial, fair with microballoon or fumed silica filler.
- Gelcoat chip and crack repair: color-matched gelcoat with MEKP, sanded and buffed back to a finish.
- Below-waterline blister and osmosis work: epoxy laminate and barrier coat over a dried, ground hull.
- Fillets and fairing: epoxy thickened with fumed silica for structural fillets, microballoons for low-density fairing compound.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use polyester or epoxy resin for a marine repair?
Match the resin to the existing laminate and the job. Polyester is the cheaper choice for repairs on a polyester hull and for new layup that will get gelcoated. Epoxy bonds to almost anything, including cured polyester, so it is the better pick for a structural repair, a bond to old glass, or below-waterline barrier work. Epoxy does not bond well under gelcoat, so plan the finish before you pick the resin.
How many plies of 1708 do I need for a transom?
For a typical transom rebuild on a 16 to 22 ft boat, run 3 to 4 plies of 1708 biaxial. The 17oz 0/90 or 45/45 bias plus the chopped strand backer gives a thick, structural laminate per ply, so you build the thickness fast without separate mat layers.
What is the difference between fumed silica and microballoons for fairing?
Fumed silica thickens resin without adding much bulk and is the choice for structural fillets and non-sag mixes. Microballoons (phenolic) make a low-density fairing compound that sands easily for cosmetic fairing above the waterline. They are different materials with different jobs, so do not swap one for the other on a structural fillet.
Do you stock the resin, cloth, and fillers for a complete repair?
