18 oz woven roving is what you lay in when a hull, stringer or transom repair needs thickness quickly. Coarse E-glass bundles woven 0/90 build more bulk per ply than a cloth of equal weight, so a short stack alternated with chopped strand mat gets you a structural laminate without piling up light plies.

Where it goes in the schedule

In a polyester layup, roving always sits between plies of chopped strand mat. The mat wets out against each face of the roving and fills its open weave; the roving supplies the bulk. Two plies of roving laid face to face trap voids where the bundles cross and give each other almost nothing to grip, so keep a mat ply between them. The same layup serves boat construction, tooling molds and panel work on RVs and trailers.

Picking a length

Cuts of 1, 3 and 10 yards cover repair work. The 125 yard full roll is for production layups and mold building.

  • E-glass woven roving, 18 oz/yd², white
  • 0/90 woven, thread count about 5 x 4
  • 50 in wide
  • 1, 3 or 10 yard cuts, or a full roll of 125 yards
  • Takes about 1:1 resin to glass by weight, roughly 2.09 oz of resin per square foot
  • Polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy compatible

Work out how much resin a layup will take with the resin calculator.

Ideal For:

  • Fast bulk build between mat layers
  • Hulls, stringers and transoms

What To Expect When You Order Fabric Rolls

Close-up of woven roving fiberglass, white E-glass bundles in a heavy plain weave with a light sheen across the flat tows

It’s relatively stiff compared to other fiberglass fabrics, but it can still conform to gradual curves with proper wet-out and pressure.

Yes, and you usually should. Woven roving builds thickness fast but has a coarse weave, so it is almost always alternated with chopped strand mat: the mat fills the weave and ties the layers together for a stronger, void-free laminate. A common schedule is mat, roving, mat. Finish with cloth or mat for a smoother surface.

Woven roving works well with polyester, vinyl ester, and epoxy resins. Polyester is common in boatbuilding, while epoxy is preferred for repairs and higher strength applications.

Woven roving is a heavy-duty fiberglass fabric made from continuous strands woven into a coarse, crisscross pattern. It provides high tensile strength and is ideal for structural laminates in marine and industrial applications.

Woven roving is much thicker and heavier than standard fiberglass cloth. It’s used for strength and bulk, while cloth is typically used for finishing or lightweight laminates.

Use sharp heavy-duty scissors or shears. Because of its thickness, it may be harder to trim cleanly than lighter fiberglass cloth.
