West System 423 Graphite Powder is a fine black powder you stir into mixed 105 epoxy for a low-friction coating that resists scuffing. Epoxy and graphite is the classic coat for rudders and centerboards, low-load, low-speed bearing surfaces, and the bottoms of racing boats that are dry sailed.

How much to add

Add about 10% by volume, roughly 1ยฝ tablespoons per 8 fl oz of mixed epoxy. One 12 oz can modifies about one gallon of mixed epoxy. The coating cures black. It is not an antifouling: a boat that stays in the water still needs bottom paint.

  • Fine graphite powder, 80 to 100% carbon
  • 423: 12 oz (340 g) can
  • Cures black; low friction and scuff resistant
  • Not an antifouling
  • For West System 105 resin with any 200-series hardener

For a hard, abrasion-resistant coat that cures metallic gray, see 420 Aluminum Powder; for moisture exclusion on a fiberglass hull, 422 Barrier Coat Additive.

No. West System says 423 does not provide antifouling qualities. Graphite epoxy gives a low-friction, scuff-resistant surface, which is why it is used on dry-sailed racing boats that are not left in the water. A boat that stays in the water still needs antifouling bottom paint.

Coating rudders and centerboards, making low-load, low-speed bearing surfaces, and coating the bottoms of dry-sailed racing boats. The cured coat is black, slick and resists scuffing.
