West System 420 Aluminum Powder is a coating additive you stir into mixed 105 epoxy for a harder, more abrasion-resistant surface with better moisture resistance. It cures metallic gray, gives limited UV protection where the epoxy will not be covered by another coating, and works as a base for paint.

How much to add

Add 5 to 10% by volume, about 1ยฝ tablespoons per 8 fl oz of mixed epoxy. One 36 oz can modifies up to 5 gallons of mixed epoxy. Stir it into resin and hardener that are already mixed. West lists it for fiberglass repairs, reusable mold surfaces, boat bottoms and composite aluminum castings.

  • Fine aluminum powder, 98 to 100% aluminum, 50 to 60 micron average particle size
  • 420-36: 36 oz (1,020 g) can
  • Cures metallic gray; harder, more abrasion- and moisture-resistant coating
  • Limited UV protection; can be painted over
  • For West System 105 resin with any 200-series hardener

It makes the cured coating harder and more resistant to abrasion, and it improves moisture resistance. It also gives limited protection from UV light where the epoxy will not be covered by another coating. The coat cures metallic gray and can be painted.

420 Aluminum Powder is for hardness, abrasion resistance and limited UV protection. 422 Barrier Coat Additive is built for moisture exclusion, to help prevent gelcoat blisters on fiberglass hulls, and goes in at a higher rate, 15 to 20% by volume.
