Laying up chopped strand mat (CSM) or wide cloth on a flat panel goes quicker with a 3-inch chip brush, and this pack of 12 covers a deck repair, a bulkhead laminate or a coat of paint in the bilge. Natural bristles spread the resin smoothly and the wood handle is light enough for a long session.
Mat wants a stipple, not a stroke
With CSM, dab the resin down through the mat rather than brushing it flat, or the strands drag and bunch. A 3-inch brush covers more mat with each dab, so the layer wets out before the batch starts to go off. Use one brush per batch and bin it once the resin kicks.

What kind of brush works with polyester resin and epoxy?
Disposable natural-bristle chip brushes are the shop standard for resin and gelcoat. They are cheap enough to throw away after a batch, and the bristles hold up to the styrene in polyester. Foam brushes work for thin coats and small touch-ups but can break down in solvent-heavy resin. Buy chip brushes in bulk, since resin ruins them and they are not worth cleaning.
