Heavy chopped strand mat at 2 oz per square foot (18 oz per square yard), 50 in wide. This is the mat you use when you need laminate thickness quickly: hull skin repairs, deck rebuilds, mold backing, anywhere a few plies of thin mat would be a waste of time. Random fiber orientation means equal strength in every direction and good interlaminar bond between cloth plies.

Where it goes: bulk build in hull and deck repairs, backing layers behind structural cloth, mold construction.
Resin compatibility: polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy. In epoxy the binder does not dissolve, so the mat stays stiffer and is best on flat or gently curved work.
Resin demand: roughly 2.4:1 resin to glass by weight, about 4.8 oz per square foot, so mix generous batches.
Width: 50 in, cut from 1 yard up to a full roll.

Heavy mat needs to be rolled out properly. Work a grooved roller through it until the white goes clear or you will leave dry spots in the middle of the ply.

Can chopped strand mat be layered with other materials?

Absolutely. It's commonly used between layers of fiberglass cloth or woven roving to add bulk and prevent print-through in gelcoats or top layers.

Do I need to roll out air bubbles when using chopped strand mat?

Yes, it's important to use a fiberglass roller to eliminate air bubbles and ensure proper wet-out during lay-up. This improves the strength and finish of the final part.

How thick is 2oz fiberglass mat?

One ply of 2 oz chopped strand mat cures to about 0.055 inch (about 1.4 mm) thick in a hand layup. It takes about 4.5 oz of resin per square foot per ply, which is why it builds thickness so quickly on hull skins, deck repairs and mold backing.

How does 2 oz mat compare to 0.75 oz or 1.5 oz fiberglass mat?

Per cured ply in a hand layup, 3/4 oz mat is about 0.020 inch thick and takes about 1.7 oz of resin per square foot, 1.5 oz mat is about 0.040 inch and 3.4 oz, and 2 oz mat is about 0.055 inch and 4.5 oz. Use 3/4 oz for tight curves and behind gelcoat, 1.5 oz for most work, and 2 oz to build thickness fast on large areas.
