The thinnest chopped strand mat we carry, 0.75 oz per square foot of randomly oriented E-glass held with a styrene-soluble binder. Its job is print blocking: a thin mat layer right behind gelcoat keeps the weave of the structural cloth from telegraphing through the finish. It also conforms into tight radii better than heavier mat, so it works as a first ply in a corner where 2 oz mat would bridge.

  • Where it goes: first ply behind gelcoat in a mold, tight corners and radii, transitions between cloth plies.
  • Resin compatibility: polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy. In epoxy the binder does not dissolve, so the mat stays stiffer and is best on flat or gently curved work; roll it firmly until no dry white fibers remain.
  • Resin demand: roughly 2.4:1 resin to glass by weight, about 1.8 oz per square foot.
  • Widths: 38 in and 50 in, cut from 1 yard up to a full roll.

Stipple it, do not brush it. Mat moves if you drag a brush across wet binder.

Ideal for:
- Spots where flexibility is needed

- Keeping parts lightweight
- General fiberglass work.
- Marine, Auto & Aerospace Use

Compatible with:
- Polyester resin
- Vinyl ester resin
- Epoxy resin, stiffer in epoxy and best on flat or gently curved work

Resin Requirements:
- 38" Width: Approximately 12 oz of resin per yard
- 50" Width: Approximately 16 oz of resin per yard

What To Expect When You Order Fabric Rolls

Fiberglass Chop Strand Mat - Boat Suppliers

Chopped strand mat (CSM) is a non-woven fiberglass reinforcement made from randomly distributed glass fibers held together with a binder. It’s commonly used in composite layups for its affordability, ease of use, and excellent bulk-building properties.

Fiberglass cloth is woven for strength in specific directions, while chopped strand mat is made of randomly oriented fibers and is better for building bulk.

Absolutely. It's commonly used between layers of fiberglass cloth or woven roving to add bulk and prevent print-through in gelcoats or top layers.

Plan on about 2.3 times the mat's weight in resin for hand layup. For 1.5 oz mat that is about 3.4 oz of resin per square foot, about 31 oz per square yard, or roughly 32 oz per yard of 38 inch mat and 42 oz per yard of 50 inch mat, per ply. Add about 15% for waste, or use the resin calculator.

Yes. Our chopped strand mat works with epoxy for repairs, tabbing, and flat or gently curved panels. The binder that holds the strands together is made to dissolve in polyester and vinyl ester, so in epoxy it stays put: the mat stays stiffer, does not drape as easily into tight curves, and can cure cloudy instead of clear. Roll it firmly until no dry white fibers remain, and for complex shapes use polyester or vinyl ester resin, or a stitched fabric like 1708 biaxial with epoxy.
