Once a container of polyurethane part A or part B has been opened, the humid air sitting on top of it is the problem. Moisture reacts with the isocyanate side, and the next pour comes out foamy, full of bubbles or soft. PolyPurge is Polytek's answer: a dry, heavier than air gas you spray into the container right before the lid goes back on. It sinks onto the liquid, pushes the damp air out of the way, and extends the shelf life of whatever is left in the can.

How to use it

Pour what the job needs and wipe the container rim clean.
Fit the extension nozzle and direct the gas into the head space above the liquid, not at the liquid itself.
Reseal the lid tight straight away, while the blanket is still sitting on the surface.
Repeat every time that container gets opened.

This is the cheapest insurance there is on a part-used pail of urethane. It is worth having on the shelf next to two part pour foam and Hi-Bond pour foam, both of which carry a moisture sensitive isocyanate side, and alongside Pol-Ease 2300 on a urethane rubber bench.

Safety: contents under pressure, may burst if heated. Do not puncture or incinerate the can and keep it out of direct sun. The gas displaces oxygen, so use it with ventilation and never in a confined space.

What does PolyPurge actually do?

It replaces the humid air in a part-used container with a dry gas that is heavier than air, so the gas settles over the liquid instead of mixing away.

Moisture is what ruins opened polyurethane liquids, so blanketing the head space before you reseal extends the shelf life of the material left in the container.

Is PolyPurge nitrogen?

No, and you will see it described that way in places. Polytek's safety data sheet lists the contents as 80 to 100 percent 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, better known as HFC-134a.

It is nonflammable and contains no ozone depleting materials.
