Cleat size follows line size

Cleat length sets the line you can put on it. The working rule is about one inch of cleat per 1/16 inch of line diameter, so a 3/8 inch dock line wants a 6 inch cleat and 1/2 inch line wants 8 inch. Gen3 Marine covers 6, 8 and 10 inch standard and 10, 12 and 15 inch in the aluminum S cleat.

Folding cleats sit flush when they are down, which is what you want on a dock edge where a fixed horn is a toe catcher: Gen3 Marine stainless in 4.5, 6 and 8 inch, Whitecap stainless in 4-1/2 and 6 inch, plus the JIF Marine pop up hinge. Back any cleat with a plate, not a washer.
