Recessed, surface mount or gimballed

Three mounting styles and they are not interchangeable. Recessed holders drop through a cut hole (Sea Dog 3 in in 2 in and 3 in depths, Whitecap and T-H Marine stainless with a drain), so you need clearance behind the panel and somewhere for the drain to go. Stud and surface mount holders bolt to a flat face. Folding holders fold away when you want the gunwale clear.

Check depth before you cut. A 2 in deep recess will not hold a tall tumbler upright in chop. Attwood's gimballed holders stay level in a seaway. Materials run ABS, PVC, poly, nylon and 316 stainless, so go stainless for anything in full sun that gets washed down.
