Boat Tie Downs

Three straps, three jobs

Three straps hold a boat on a trailer and do different jobs. The bow tie down pulls the bow onto the bunk (BoatBuckle Kwik-Lok, the retractable ratchet versions). Transom straps pull the stern down over the axle. Gunwale straps go over the boat for a long haul. A winch strap is not a tie down and should never be the only thing holding the bow.

Cam buckle or ratchet is the real choice. A cam buckle is faster and cannot be over tensioned. A ratchet will crush a gunwale if you keep cranking, hence the pads. Retractable G2 stainless costs the most and survives salt. Gunwale strap lengths, 2 inch by 13, 16 and 20 ft, are sized to beam.
