Picking a weight and a spec
Run the weight the engine manual calls for. 25W-40 is the common outboard and sterndrive spec, 10W-30 covers a lot of smaller four strokes, 25W-50 is the heavier synthetic option and Yamalube 5W-30 synthetic is there for engines that call for it. Catalyst rated oils, which Sierra lists in several weights, are required on engines with a catalytic converter.
Marine four stroke oil is not automotive oil with a different label. FC-W rated formulas are built for the corrosion and constant high load a marine engine sees. Sierra, Mercury, Quicksilver, Yamalube and Johnson Evinrude XPS are all here in quart, gallon and case of 6 or 12.
