Fillers, Fairing & Putty

Thicken, fillet, fair, or fill

Pick the filler by what the mix has to do. Fumed silica and West System 406 thicken resin without adding bulk, which is what you want under hardware and in a structural bond. Cotton flock, milled fiber and chopped strand add strength to fillets. Phenolic microballoons, Q-cells, 3M glass bubbles and West 410 Microlight sand easily and belong in fairing.

A low density fairing filler is not a structural adhesive, so do not fillet a stringer with microballoons. Below the waterline, use a blend meant for it (Layform Hydro LF-320), not a general fairing mix. Ready-mixed putties like Interlux Watertite and the Layform Bond, Fillet, Build and Skim blends save mixing time but lock you into their ratio.
